FOUNDATION WATERPROOFING SOLUTIONS

Why Foundation Waterproofing is Critical

The foundation is the most crucial structural component of any building — and the most exposed to moisture from soil and ground water. Without proper waterproofing, water rises through capillary action, damaging the foundation and migrating into the walls, causing long-term structural issues and unhealthy indoor environments.

Common symptoms of foundation waterproofing failure include:

  • Water stains or leak marks on floors and walls
  • Standing water or puddles on the floor
  • Mold growth, musty smell, or dampness

Due to these issues often being caused by underlying moisture pressure, even visible damage may not clearly indicate the source. That’s why professional intervention is essential.

Understanding Waterproofing: Positive vs. Negative Side

Positive Side WaterproofingNegative Side Waterproofing
Applied to the same side as water sourceApplied to the opposite side of the water source
More effective, as it blocks water before enteringSecondary option if the source side is inaccessible

Whenever possible, waterproofing should always be done from the positive side for better results.

WG GROUP’S RECOMMENDED FOUNDATION WATERPROOFING SYSTEMS

1. Crystalline-Based Cementitious System

(Can be used from both positive and negative sides)

This is a reactive waterproofing system that uses Portland cement, treated quartz, and active chemicals. When applied, it reacts with moisture and unhydrated cement to form insoluble crystals that block water entry — even under pressure.

✔ Features & Benefits:

  • Active protection from both sides of the structure
  • Seals pores and shrinkage cracks
  • Allows vapor passage (structure can breathe)
  • Reactivates upon contact with water (self-healing)
  • Protects against saltwater, wastewater, aggressive chemicals
  • Safe for potable water tanks and water treatment facilities

🛠 Application Process:

  • Surface cleaning and preparation
  • Repair of honeycombs/joints with crystalline or repair mortar
  • Pressure grouting using PRAH (for hydrostatic conditions)
  • 50×50 mm angle fillet at starter joints with PMM
  • Maintain SSD condition (Saturated Surface Dry) before application
  • Curing: Keep damp for 10 days; protect from sunlight, wind, frost

2. Polymer-Based Elastomeric Cementitious Coating

(Positive side only)

This is a flexible, seamless waterproofing coating used to protect reinforced concrete exposed to the atmosphere, acid gases, chlorides, and water. Ideal for both new and old structures.

✔ Features & Benefits:

  • High flexibility to accommodate surface movement
  • Bridges shrinkage cracks
  • Durable, long-lasting, and tough coating
  • Suitable for water tanks, culverts, basements, and roof slabs
  • Best used as an undercoat (not UV stable)

🛠 Application Process:

  •  Surface preparation and cleaning
  • Repair weak spots using PMM or non-shrink repair mortar
  • Pressure grouting using PRAN (for non-hydrostatic conditions)
  • Create 50×50 mm angle fillet using PMM
  • Surface must be in SSD condition
  • Apply silicon-based sealer (Zycosil) or acrylic-based (La Brush Seal) if surface is porous
  • For large areas (>5000 sq ft), add glass fiber mesh (45 GSM) between coats
